Letter: Roe v. Wade was a shameful, evil and unconstitutional decision

I would like to respond to the Lloyd Omdahl commentary, "Abortion issue remains in public square," published Jan 1.

Omdahl states that "one of the primary reasons for the creation of governments is the protection of life." I fully agree with him. Omdahl's article is written from a neutral perspective even though it is his Democratic Party that does not believe in the sanctity of life or that the right to life outweighs all other rights.

Omdahl mentions President Trump's "unChristian demeanor." Trump may not be a model Christian but he is pro-life, which is more Christian than his predecessor, Barack Obama, who in my opinion was a "Chino" (Christian in name only). Omdahl apathetically concludes that "in any case" Trump will not overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's infamous Roe v. Wade decision which legalized abortion in the United States.

He states this as if the Supreme Court always makes the right decision. We "pro-life folks" know Roe v. Wade was a shameful, evil and unconstitutional decision and we continue to hope and pray that someday it does get repealed.

As a Catholic, I can assure Omdahl that the Catholic Church is committed to ending the scourge of abortion. I do not agree with his statement that "more members (Catholics) favor abortion than not." Where does he get his facts? On the contrary, Catholics believe that abortion is a non-negotiable issue because of its destructive quality and the persistent moral harm it causes. I do not know any Catholic that "favors" abortion.

Not long ago most Americans agreed with the Catholic Church's position on abortion. The church's position has not changed. Rather, it is the culture and the Democratic Party that has changed and, unfortunately, been deceived. Abortion is a moral issue the Catholic Church has consistently stood firmly against.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. It will also be the 45th annual March for Life rally in Washington, D.C. Pro-lifers know that God is on their side on this issue and he will answer our prayers. This immoral decision does not need to prevail.

The Book of Proverbs says, "Rescue those who are being led off to death; hold back those who are being carried to slaughter." (Prov 24:11) The pro-life voice needs to be heard. We are the only voice those babies have.

People ask God, "How can you let abortion continue?" I believe his reply would be, "I was about to ask you that same question."
