To give our readers the most local and comprehensive information in this spring’s flood fight, we’ve created neighborhood flood beats this year. Using the vast newsgathering force of our newspaper, each reporter is assigned to neighborhoods or specific rural areas in which flooding is most likely to occur. People living within the area are also encouraged to contribute to the reporting or photography (go to our Flood Bloggers page for more information). Think of it as having your very own neighborhood Web site. That’s the concept.
In the metro area proper, we’ve organized beats using elementary school boundaries, or known development areas, since people seem to identify with those. These areas generally hug the Red River corridor, a creek or drain prone to flooding.
In Fargo, the flood beats are: Trollwood, Longfellow, Washington, Horace Mann, Downtown, Hawthorne, Clara Barton, Lincoln, River Drive, Rose Creek, Centennial, Bennett and Osgood.
In Moorhead, the beats are: Robert Asp (north of Main Avenue), Ellen Hopkins (south of Main to Interstate 94), and S.G. Reinertsen (south of I-94).
West Fargo and the areas around Horace and Harwood, N.D., also have their own flood beats, as do North River and Highland Park, Briarwood to Heritage Hills, Wild Rice, Oxbow and Hickson areas.
Minnesota’s Oakport Township, Kragnes and Georgetown have beats, as do North Dakota’s Valley City and Lisbon.
