Cobbers take down Gophers in Burgau's last game as head coach

MINNEAPOLIS - The Concordia baseball team sent head coach Bucky Burgau out in style.

The Cobbers defeated the Minnesota Gophers 3-2 on Wednesday in Burgau's last game as head coach.

"I guess I couldn't have scripted it any better," Burgau said. "It was really fun for our kids to end the season like that."

Chris Coste will run the Concordia baseball program next season with Burgau as an assistant.

Burgau has been the Cobbers head coach for 36 seasons.

The Gophers are a Division I program and the Cobbers play D-III.

"I'm fired up for our guys and the future," Burgau said. "This is a good steppingstone for the program."

Devin Johnson had two of Concordia's three hits.

Despite the lack of hits, Burgau could see that his players were ready prior to the game.

"You could see it in their eyes," he said. "A different group showed up for (batting practice) tonight. There was some fire, some juice."

After the Gophers tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, the Cobbers' relief pitchers shut the door the rest of the way.

William Jacobson, Ross Merriman and Bryce Feia combined to give up only three hits and allowed no runs through the final 6 Xc innings.

Justin Anderson started the game for the Cobbers.

"It's a really fun way to end the season and send the guys home for summer," Burgau said.
