Retherford, Laber among fast starters for RedHawks

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will be close to the midpoint of their 100-game American Association baseball season when they start a three-game series at 7:02 tonight against the rival Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Here’s a look at the top performers for F-M in the first half of the regular season:

Top hitter C.J. Retherford, 1B Through 46 games entering Thursday’s game, Retherford led the team with 35 RBIs, 24 extra-base hits and a .461 slugging percentage to go along with a .270 batting average. A fixture in the middle of the batting order, Retherford also played a role in four walk-off wins.

Top pitcher Jake Laber, LHP Laber leads the team with six victories, winning five straight start at one point. While his ERA climbed above 4 after getting roughed up in his last start, he’s pitched at least five innings in his past eight starts. Right-handed starter Drew Bowlin (2.50 ERA) and left-handed reliever Joe Harris (1.63 ERA) also had strong first halves.

Surprise Petey Paramore, C Paramore was batting a team-leading .305 in his first 44 games, including 11 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs. Paramore ranks second on the team with a .403 on-base percentage and has been solid behind the plate.

Report card RedHawks manager Doug Simunic hands out his midseason grades:

Pitching: B-plus The RedHawks ranked No. 7 out of 12 teams with a 4.56 ERA through their first 46 games. Closer Nate Garcia is among the league leaders with 12 saves.

“We’ve struggled a little bit starting (pitching) … and our bullpen has been pretty good for the most part,” Simunic said.

Hitting: B-plus The RedHawks rank last in the league with a .254 team batting average in their first 46 games.

“We’ve been inconsistent scoring runs,” Simunic said.

Defense: B The RedHawks have made 48 errors in their first 46 games for a .972 fielding percentage.

“We’ve been injured at a lot of spots,” Simunic said. “We’ve had to use some young guys in the outfield.”
