PERHAM, Min.. – A Drew Anderson grand slam fueled a nine-run fourth inning as the Moorhead Blues eliminated Bemidji 17-6 in seven innings at the Minnesota Substate 14 American Legion baseball tournament.

Anderson was 4-for-5 with three singles, the grand slam, two runs scored and seven RBIs to lead the Blues.

“We pitched strikes and put a lot on the board,” Anderson said. “It was a good day of baseball.”

Moorhead’s leadoff hitter Preston Kraiter and Jason England scored on an Anderson first-inning single to give the Blues an early 2-0 lead.

Bemidji answered with a five-run third inning, batting around the order and taking its only lead of the game at 5-2 on runs by Erik Fitzgerald, Parker Lucas, Collin Rutledge and Connor McNallan.

Tony Geerdes had a two-RBI single to plate Rutledge and McNallan.

Bemidji’s lead disappeared in the Blues’ fourth-inning barrage that sent 14 men to the plate.

Brett Erickson’s two-RBI double plated Anderson and Jared Benson to pull within a run at 5-4. Kraiter recorded a two-run RBI single scoring Eli Johnson and Brett Erickson to go up 6-5. Kraiter scored the game-winner on a bases-loaded walk to Mike Wiesmann.

Moorhead, the top seed in the tournament, moves on to face the loser of the championship semifinal between defending champions No. 4 Alexandria and No. 7 Fergus Falls.

Fergus Falls is looking for their third straight upset.

Moorhead has won three straight games since an opening round 2-1 loss to No. 8 Detroit Lakes.

“That was just an ugly game all around, said Anderson. “We made it tough on ourselves, but we have the pitching staff to do it.”

The Blues opened Saturday’s play with a 17-8 victory over Perham.

Bemidji advanced by knocking out Detroit Lakes 12-8.
