JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Heading into Tuesday, it had been more than a year since Kyle Glander hit a home run.

“I think I definitely have the potential when I step up there,” said the Fargo Post 400 lefty.

Glander ended that skid by hammering a pair of long balls during the play-in round of the Class 2A state Legion tournament at Jack Brown Stadium. No. 9-seeded Post 400 advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 9-5 win over eighth-seeded Williston.

“I was just trying to hit the ball hard,” Glander said. “I wasn’t trying to put it over the fence, but I’ll take it.”

With the park being 300 feet down the first-base line, Glander knew he had a chance. He finished 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, hitting solo shots in the fourth and sixth innings.

“Seeing the 300 on the fence made me smile a bit,” said Glander, whose team plays top-seeded Bismarck at 4:30 p.m. today. “I’m glad I could put two over. It’s been a while.”

Said Post 400 coach Matt Peck: “Knowing he’s one of our better left-handed hitters, we told him to be looking for that inside pitch. He did a great job of adjusting and being a confident hitter.”

Post 400 (6-23) never trailed in the game, thanks to a two-run shot from Zander Langevin in the first inning.

Starting pitcher Alex DuBord kept Williston

(20-30) at bay with eight strong innings, allowing three runs on four hits, three walks and a hit batter. He struck out seven.

“(Alex) has been a great leader for us,” Peck said. “He stayed around the strike zone, stayed efficient and kept his pitch count down. He used his fastball really well.”

Williston’s Matt Kohler pitched into the seventh, eventually suffering the loss. The Keybirds, who were paced by Bailey Zaste’s home run, don’t play until Thursday, when they take on the loser of today’s Fargo Post 2-Dickinson matchup.
