A combined 13 errors were committed by Fargo Post 2 and Rapid City (S.D.) but, in the end, Post 2 was celebrating a 14-7 victory at Jack Williams Stadium.

The win is Post 2’s first at a regional since 1992 when the team won a region title and advanced to the American Legion World Series.

Hitting was what ended the drought. Post 2 tallied 18 hits in the game.

“Our hitting was what kept us in the game,” said Post 2 center fielder Carter Thompson, who finished 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. “I feel like we are playing good baseball right now, and it should carry over into the rest of the tournament.”

Post 2 (33-18) advances to play the St. Cloud (Minn.) Chutes at 8 p.m. today in the winner’s bracket.

“The key was that when we got opportunities we got some big hits,” Post 2 head coach Luke Rustad said. “That was nice to see. Whether it was an opportunity created by an error or a walk we followed them up with hits.”

Post 2 was 6-11 all-time against Rapid City entering the game. Rapid City eliminated Post 2 from the Central Plains tournament a year ago.

“Coming into the game, I was just hoping we’d play well,” Rustad said. “In the back of your mind, the fact that we went 0-2 at this tournament a year ago was there, but we hit the ball well and got a win. We came out a little tight, and that seemed to spread into the field, but we settled down.”

Rapid City (41-21) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring the runs on two hits and three Post 2 errors.

Post 2 battled back and eventually tied the game 4-4 in the third inning, scoring the runs on an error, an RBI single by Lincoln Voss and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andrew Lein.

“We usually play seven inning games, but in these nine-inning games you are never really out of it,” Thompson said. “Nobody was hanging their head.”

Post 2 took a lead in the fourth inning plating a run when Thompson connected for an RBI double that scored Gunnar Linstaedt.

Three more runs came Post 2’s way in the fifth. Linstaedt and Seth Tollefson each provided RBI base hits in the inning.

Rapid City plays Omaha PI Midwest at 1 p.m. today in a loser-out game.

Post 2 starter Jake Salentine struck out three batters in 7Z\c innings of work to earn the victory.

Linstaedt was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Post 2.
