South Dakota set to hire Western Illinois' Nielson as next head football coach

VERMILLION, S.D.—The University of South Dakota is set to name Bob Nielson as its next head football coach, the school said in a news release Monday.

South Dakota will officially announced the hiring at 1 p.m. today at a news conference on the USD campus. Nielson, 56, has been the head coach at Western Illinois the past three seasons. Both South Dakota and Western Illinois are in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the same league as North Dakota State.

Nielson has a 186-80-1 record in 23 seasons as a head coach, including leading Minnesota-Duluth to Division II national championships in 2008 and 2010.
