FARGO – On a day when North Dakota State and the University of North Dakota decided to end years of not playing football, another streak ended in the other futbal.

The Bison women’s soccer team stopped eight straight losses to UND in all sports Friday night at Dacotah Field.

“Hopefully we broke the curse and everyone else will follow in our steps,” said Bison midfielder Lauren Miller.

The 1-0 win erased a 4-2 loss to UND in last season’s nonconference matchup. It may have been just a one-score difference, but NDSU held ball control virtually the entire two halves. The Bison had a 16-5 shot advantage, and had six corner kicks to UND’s zero.

“NDSU is a very well organized team,” said UND head coach Matt Kellogg. “For a young team, we competed for the entire 90 minutes, but you make one mistake and they’ll make you pay for it.”

Miller took advantage of the mistake – a misplayed bouncing ball in front of the UND net. Miller tipped it in with her right foot with 28 minutes left in the match – a slow roller that the UND players helplessly watched roll into the net.

Until that point, it appeared it was a matter of time before NDSU cashed in. NDSU head coach Mark Cook said speed of play for his team was the key.

“We had really good possession tonight,” Miller said.

The last Bison win in any NDSU-UND matchup was baseball in the spring of 2013 when NDSU won the first two games of a four-game series. UND won the last two and took wins last school year in volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s basketball and another two baseball games.

“We knew what they were saying up in Grand Forks,” Cook said. “We wanted to start the year off right.”

UND had one legitimate scoring threat with four minutes remaining – a header by Jessica Johnson. But it went high, preserving the shutout for Bison goalkeeper Sierra Bonham.

FIRST HALF: No scoring.

SECOND HALF: NDSU, Miller (Kinnarath), 62:07.

SAVES: UND, Hestdalen 5-3–8. NDSU, Bonham 0-0–0
