FARGO — North Dakota State athletics has a long history of promoting from within and the baseball program was no different on Tuesday. The Bison named assistant coach Tyler Oakes to take over the program after former head coach Tod Brown departed for a similar job at New Mexico last week.

Oakes has been the pitching coach since 2014 and was appointed recruiting coordinator in 2016. He was elevated to associate head coach two years later.

"There was no need to look elsewhere," said NDSU athletic director Matt Larsen.

Oakes played at the University of Minnesota from 2006-09 and was a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota State in 2010 and 2011. He spent two years as a volunteer assistant at Minnesota before coming to NDSU.
