VERMILLION, S.D. — Stanley Umude scored 26 points and A.J. Plitzuweit scored 20 as South Dakota defeated North Dakota State 80-71 on Saturday at the Coyote Sports Center.
With the win, South Dakota improved to 11-3 in the Summit League and 13-9 overall. NDSU fell to 10-5 in the Summit and 12-11 overall. The teams play again in their final regular season game at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, in Vermillion.
The Bison started the game well, taking a seven-point lead about eight minutes into the first half. But the Coyotes put together a 25-6 run over the next 11 minutes and led by 12. USD led by eight at halftime.
The Coyotes punched the lead up to 17 points in the first five minutes of the second half, and while the Bison rallied they couldn't get closer that five points. Both times, South Dakota immediately ran the advantage back into double digits. It didn't help that the Coyotes got to the free throw line 31 times and made 25 while NDSU was 7 of 11 from the foul line.
The Bison's Rocky Kreuser had 17 points and 13 rebounds, Maleeck Harden-Hayes scored 14 points, Jarius Cook had 12 points and Grant Nelson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
