FARGO — One day after being nominated as one of the top newcomers to FCS Division I football, North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance on Wednesday was named to the Walter Payton Award "Watch List," an honor that goes to the best offensive player in the subdivision.

Lance, from Marshall, Minn., is one 16 players who were added to the Payton preseason list of 26 players and the only freshman nominated. He's thrown 19 touchdown passes without an interception and ranks second in the FCS in passing efficiency and fourth in passing completion percentage. He is the sixth Bison player to be named to the "Watch List" with the last being quarterback Easton Stick.
