FARGO — Bo Pelini's days in the Missouri Valley Football Conference are over. The Youngstown State head coach resigned his position on Monday afternoon and accepted the defensive coordinator position at LSU, according to the Youngstown State athletic website.

YSU athletic director Ron Strollo said a national search for a replacement will begin immediately.

It will be a return to an old job for Pelini, who was LSU's defensive coordinator on the Tigers' 2007 national championship team. He later accepted the head coaching position at Nebraska, was fired from that before taking over at Youngstown. He led the Penguins to the 2016 FCS national title game, but struggled to get the program back to national title-contending status since.

He was 33-28 in five seasons.
