FARGO — Trey Lance had his name called early Thursday evening, April 29, at the NFL Draft. The former North Dakota State quarterback was selected at No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers.

The 6-foot-4, 226-pound Lance played in 19 games during his Bison career, including 17 starts winning all 17. After a standout redshirt freshman season in 2019, Lance had a meteoric rise to becoming a high first-round NFL Draft pick.

In 2019, Lance completed 192 of 287 passes (67%) for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns with no interceptions. He rushed for 1,100 yards and 14 TDs to lead the Bison to a 16-0 record and a third consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship in his only full season as a starter. Lance won the Walter Payton Award, for the best offensive player in the FCS, and the Jerry Rice Award, for the top freshman in the subdivision.

Lance played in one game as a redshirt sophomore last October and then declared for the NFL Draft with the rest of NDSU's season being moved to the spring due to COVID-19. Lance also played in two games in 2018 as a true freshman, but didn't lose a year of eligibility due to the NCAA's four-game rule.
