CLEVELAND — Former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance was on the red carpet Thursday night, April 29, for the NFL Draft in Cleveland.

The San Francisco 49ers selected Lance at No. 3 overall, making him the second Bison QB to be selected in the top three in five years.

“He decided to bet on himself and believe in himself," NFL Network analyst Rich Eisen said on the broadcast after Lance was drafted. "He is a quarterback, he thought. North Dakota State agreed. He had 17 stellar starts for them and now he strolls to an NFL Draft floor, tears in his eyes, as the quarterback of the future of the San Francisco 49ers. What a moment.”

Lance played in 19 games for the Bison, including leading the team to a 16-0 record and NCAA Division I FCS national championship in 2019. As a sophomore, he played in one game last October for NDSU before he declared for the NFL Draft.

Lance became the second Bison quarterback to be selected in the first round since 2016 when the Philadelphia Eagles drafted Carson Wentz at No. 2 overall. The 6-foot-4, 226-pound Lance, from Marshall, Minn., is the third consecutive Bison quarterback to become an NFL Draft pick. The Los Angeles Chargers selected Easton Stick in the fifth round of the 2019 draft.

San Francisco released a video of the team's phone call that let Lance know he was the team's selection with the third pick. Leading into the draft, many analysts thought the 49ers may select Alabama quarterback Mac Jones.

"Are you ready to do this thing, man," San Francisco general manager John Lynch said in phone call with Lance. "Welcome to the 49ers buddy."

Lynch then handed the phone to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

"I didn't know coach, you wouldn't tell me nothing," Lance said.

"We didn't tell anybody, man," Shanahan replied.
