AUSTIN, Texas — North Dakota State senior Payton Otterdahl took fourth place in the men's shot put at the NCAA Division I Outdoor track and field championships Wednesday.
Otterdahl's best effort was 65 feet, 3 1/4 inches. Texas sophomore Adrian Piperi took first place with a 69-3 1/4.
Otterdahl earned the highest finish for a Bison men's athlete at a Division I outdoor meet. He was a national champion in the men's shot put and weight throw at the Division I indoor meet in March in Birmingham, Ala.
Otterdahl earned first-team, All-America honors, entering the meet ranked second in the men's shot put for the outdoor season.
Bison freshman Kristoffer Thomsen took 15th place in the men's shot put to earn second-team, All-America honors with a 62-1/4.
NDSU sophomore Alex Talley, a West Fargo High School graduate, took 19th place in the shot put (60-8) and 22nd in the men's hammer throw (214-9) to earn honorable mention All-America status in both events.
Bison freshman Brendan Artley was 24th in the javelin (195-5) for honorable mention All-America honors.
Otterdahl is slated to compete in the men's discus Friday night. He has a No. 3 national ranking in that event.
