Bison softball holds off late Bulldogs rally

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Butler's comeback attempt fell just short as the North Dakota State softball team held on for a 3-2 victory Wednesday in the FAU/FIU Invitational at Seymour Complex.

Cara Beatty led the Bison with two RBIs, one of which came from her third home run of the year. Vanessa Anderson belted her second homer of the season.

Paige Vargas (5-4) took a shutout into the final inning and tied her career high in strikeouts. She gave up two earned runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts to earn the complete-game victory.

NDSU took a 3-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning. Butler (8-11) nearly tied it, as Payton Longest hit a two-run pinch hit single. Vargas struck out the the next two batters to secure the win for the Bison.

NDSU (12-11) will play Eastern Illinois at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, and will remain in Clearwater through March 17 for the USF Series Tournament.
