FARGO-Few businesses have operated in north Fargo longer than Village Hair Design.
The beauty salon at 3105 Broadway will celebrate 30 years of business later this month.
Stylists Pat Finch, Teri Kreiger and Ronda Nelson have been there since the beginning. Many of their clients have as well.
Nelson said they've celebrated countless birthdays, weddings, babies, grandbabies and other milestones together over the years. She joked that they've also heard their fair share of news and gossip.
"We could write a book. It's just been so much fun-stories we've heard, experiences we've had, funny things that happened along the way," she said.
The public is invited to join them and their fellow stylists at an anniversary party from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at the salon. The event will feature coffee, goodies and door prizes.
Village Hair Design was established in 1987 by Lowell and Marie Mueller. Lowell was a popular north Fargo barber who first opened Edgewood Barbers in the Valley North Mall in 1975. When he was forced to relocate the shop to make room for Trollwood Village apartments, he decided to open Village Hair Design next door.
The couple already owned Beauty Lane and Lords and Ladies in Detroit Lakes, Minn. They consolidated those salons before selling Beauty Lane in 2002. When Lowell retired in 2003, they sold Edgewood Barbers to Laurie Ludlum.
Marie's involvement in the salon was limited to bookkeeping until Lowell died in 2007.
"The first 20 years, this was Lowell's other than me making sure there was money in the bank and paychecks going out," she said. "You know, I probably would have sold this not long after he passed away, but the people who work here are so special. And they're so loyal and so great. This is another family."
Mueller, who is also a Realtor with Advantage Realtors in Fargo, admits it's been a struggle to keep the business going at times.
The loyalty of the retirees who live at Trollwood Village helps, but Mueller said they also need to attract new clients.
"I think people forget that Northport isn't the end of Broadway," she said.
She also pointed out that Village Hair Design stylists specialize in more than the shampoo/sets popular with the older crowd. They stay current with the latest cut and color trends.
Mueller would also like to add more stylists.
She said it's been a bit of a challenge for two reasons. One is that stylists just out of beauty school aren't interested in doing shampoo/sets. The other is that many prefer to rent chair space rather than work as salon employees. Mueller said she'd consider doing booth rental if she could get enough stylists to make it work.
Nelson said Mueller is one of the reasons she continues to work after all these years.
"She's a great person to work for," she said. "And I love what I do. ... I just love my old customers and I like new ones. I love the challenge."
