FARGO — Fargo-Moorhead snagged the top spot in a national job-listing site's list of "Hottest Jobs Markets" for 2020.
The job-listing site considered metropolitan areas with more than 100,000 people and their job market size and growth, pay, and job seeker leverage to create this list.
"Fargo is a big 'small town' right? People come here because they have that kind of that small-town feel," said Eli Jones, a Fargo branch manager for Spherion, a staffing agency with locations nationwide. "It's not so big city, but you still have the options and things that you can do when you're not at work."
According to the list which appeared on Ziprecruiter.com, job postings are up 55% a year in Fargo.
Also, the Fargo-Moorhead area has a high opportunity index, a favorable ratio of job openings to candidates.
"There's a place in this workforce for everyone that comes here," said Jones. "If they want to work, there are jobs for them."
Jones said the "high opportunity index" may be a bit sugar-coated. He added it's not necessarily the number of jobs, but the complexity and finding the right people for those positions.
"The same exact job posting two or three years ago that had, like, 60, 70 hits on it now had, like, three or four," he said. "We're having to look a lot harder, and sell our clients on our candidates while also selling our candidates on our clients."
He said engineering, information technology, and accounting positions dominate open listings. Several companies in the F-M area offer huge sign-on bonuses because they just can't find qualified people.
But Jones highlights overall flexibility will be key moving into 2020 to help companies capitalize on this trailblazer ranking.
"People are looking for different options as far as hours and when they're available or working from home," he said. "When employers find the right candidate, they can't wait."
Other Midwestern cities also appeared on the list including Sioux Falls, South Dakota in third place and Bismarck in ninth place.
