FARGO-One of Fargo's public housing apartment buildings will get some much-needed upgrades and renovations over the next couple years.
Work started in November on a $7.2 million renovation of New Horizons Manor, 2525 Broadway N., a 98-unit complex that has stood on the site since the early 1970s.
Fargo Housing Authority Executive Director Lynn Fundingsland said the building is getting a "pretty thorough" overhaul that will continue through the spring of 2019. The complex is getting a new boiler system and a replaced elevator, as well as a new plumbing system, upgrades to the exterior and parking lot, and new insulation.
Fundingsland said replacing the plumbing will require crews to remove cabinets, which is why all units will also get new cabinets, energy efficient appliances and flooring.
He said officials have vacated 18 units where work will be done first. Once finished, tenants will move and the next 18 units will be refurbished. He said all 98 units are scheduled to be done in late 2018 and final pieces of the project will be wrapped up in March or April 2019.

Fundingsland said the upgrades will cut the building's energy and water usage by about a third. The building has been at nearly 100 percent occupancy since it first opened, he said, and about 70 to 80 percent of tenants are in walkers or wheelchairs because it's fully accessible. Rents will not be increased because of the renovation, he said.
Fargo Housing Authority is also looking to make similar improvements in the coming years at two of its other buildings like this, including the 46-unit Pioneer Manor, 201 11th St. N., and the 249-unit Lashkowitz High Rise, 101 2nd St. S.
