FARGO — On March 11, 2020 Hornbacher's announced a temporary pause in their long tradition of free coffee and doughnut balls at all its stores. On Monday, June 7, with the pandemic restrictions easing, the doughnut balls and coffee have returned.
"Being able to have coffee and doughnut balls again and being able to sample again, all of the normal stuff from a year ago is starting to come back," said Hornbacher's President Matt Leiseth.
Monica Hoyt and daughter Claire of Horace are longtime fans of the donut balls, and got theirs on Monday.
"It just feels like covid is over," Monica Hoyt said.
The tradition of the free coffee and doughnut balls at Hornbacher's goes back more than 40 years, and their customers noticed when covid forced the shutdown of the treats.
"When you have to pause a tradition that has been going on for so long, people were not really happy about it," Leiseth said.
After so many months of changes in our lives, this is at least one sign that we are turning the corner.
The doughnut ball tradition started at the Northport and Moorhead locations more than four decades ago.
