DETROIT LAKES, Minn. -- Lakeshirts, a wholesale supplier of custom-designed apparel based in Detroit Lakes, has acquired Lakegirl, a line of clothing and accessories that celebrates the "lake lifestyle."

Founded by Peggy Heglie, Lakegirl got its start 14 years ago in a small gift shop called Peggary in Detroit Lakes. Heglie explained during an interview in 2014 that one of the earliest items she sold was a "Lakegirl" T-shirt that included the names of the Seven Sisters lakes: Ida, Maud, Eunice, Sallie, Melissa, Lizzie and Lida. She eventually trademarked Lakegirl and took the brand wholesale.

Today, Lakegirl merchandise is sold in over 800 stores across the country.

Heglie said the sale just made sense, considering Lakegirls has been a customer of Lakeshirts since the brand debuted back in 2004.

"I am happy and proud to announce the sale of our company to Lakeshirts," Heglie said. "Lakegirl has come full circle and has landed in the perfect spot. With this transaction we will be able to expand our designs, carry a larger inventory and further develop our product line."
