WATCH: New Pizza Corner changes meet online outcry

North Dakota's homegrown pizza brand is making changes, and some people are not happy about it.

Pizza Corner has made changes to their packaging, the label and, unsettling to many North Dakotans, the cheese on the pizza is now on top of the other toppings.

Bernatello’s purchased Valley City-based Pizza Corner in 2016 and some fans feel that the pizza has never been the same.

“We know that change isn’t easy and that people in North Dakota are very, very passionate about the pizza,” said manager of advertising and promotions at Bernatello’s, Matt Selvig.

Selvig said that Bernatello’s plans to take the pizza to other markets and that the updated packaging and logo will help them do that.

“We just felt it was time to freshen up the look of the packaging,” Selvig said.

The company decided to place cheese over toppings to allow for a more fresh taste, Selvig said. Only toppings on three pizza styles were moved beneath the cheese.

Selvig will be in Grand Forks starting this Sunday at several area Hugo’s to let customers sample the pizza and talk with them about the changes that were made.

He will be at the East Grand Forks Hugo’s on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Monday he will be at the Hugo’s on 32nd Avenue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then the Hugo’s on Washington Street from 3 to 6 p.m.

On Tuesday he will be at the Hugo’s on 13th Avenue South and Columbia Road. And Wednesday Selvig will be at the 32nd Avenue Hugo’s from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We want to show people that this is still the same old Pizza Corner, just a fresh look,” Selvig said.

On Twitter, many were still unconvinced.
