FARGO - Several secret Santas, apparently feeling flush with the spirit of the season, have been paying off holiday layaways at Walmarts in Fargo and Dilworth.

The biggest cash Claus made his stop at the Walmart Supercenter at 4731 13th Ave. S., on Tuesday, Dec. 11, Assistant Manager Jeremie Sprague said.

There, a man who identified himself as “Ole,” plunked down between $3,000 and $4,000 “and just cleared everything out,” Sprague said.

The Miracle on 13th Avenue had been preceded by several people paying “a couple hundred dollars” toward layaways in the days leading up to the big gift, Sprague said.

Layaway customers “were just over the moon” when they were called with the news by another manager, Sprague said.

“Quite a few (layaway items) have been picked up. The lion’s share has already been picked up,” Sprague said. “We appreciate the generosity to the community this time of year.”

Fargo’s 55th Avenue South Walmart didn’t have the same luck, a manager said Tuesday. However, the Walmart at 415 34th St. N. in Dilworth has seen a few elves itching to help others by paying off layaways.

“There have been some paid off the last couple days. There are some very generous people out there,” Dilworth store Manager Steve Russell said.

The donors either paid off layaways or made payments toward them, Russell said. He declined to release dollar amounts of the gifts.
