How does it feel to be named the best middle school in Fargo-Moorhead?

“Certainly unexpected, but certainly appreciated. Our staff is amazing, and it is nice to have their collective efforts recognized,” Principal Amy Herrick said.

What’s the most memorable moment from last year for your school team?

“There are far too many to mention, but particularly memorable was our end-of-year retirement celebration. We had multiple staff retire who had been at Discovery for a long time, some even since the building was built in 1994,” Herrick said. “It was heartwarming to hear the collective impact that they had on our students, families and staff throughout the years and reaffirmed that it is the people that make this school a great place to be.”

What does your school provide that people may not know about?

“We operate as a ‘Discovery family’ to build a foundation for success during these formative middle school years,” Herrick said. “Every student who walks through the doors of this school is ‘our’ student and will continue to be even after they have left our school.”

  • Second place: Horizon Middle School

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
