FARGO — A Fargo preschool and daycare that just opened months ago was forced to close Thursday morning, Jan. 31, after a water pipe burst and flooded the building, sending parents scrambling to find a place to leave their kids for the day.

Melissa Burk said she noticed something strange when she opened up Active Minds Academy in south Fargo — a small puddle right when she walked in.

She found out what happened when she went down the hall: "I walked around the corner and saw a small river," Burk said.

A pipe in a back corner of the hallway had burst, sending water through half the building, flooding several classrooms.

The daycare will have to replace cubbies and clean and salvage toys. Staff said they'll be able to salvage the floor.

Active Minds Academy just opened in September, and the owner said it's already been tough enough just trying to launch the business.

"It is extremely disheartening, there were a lot of tears this morning our teachers too like it was just very hard to see," said owner Jenna Schultz.

Active Minds Academy takes care of 82 kids a day, and helped parents scramble to find alternative daycare their kids.

And they say the children and parents are their motivation to get things back up and running after a long weekend of work.

Active Minds Academy plans to re-open 6:30 a.m. Monday, Feb 4. There's no damage estimate yet.
