FARGO - The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce has named Bruce Furness the recipient of this year's Legacy Leader Award.

The award recognizes the contributions of longtime local leaders in shaping and serving the chamber as well as the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area and communities in the surrounding region.

Furness will receive the award at the chamber's annual meeting Sept. 20 at the Fargo Holiday Inn.

Furness is a Bismarck native and the fourth-longest serving mayor of Fargo.

He served on the Fargo City Commission from 1992-1994 and as mayor from 1994-2006.

During his years of service, Fargo saw much growth and the redevelopment of its downtown.

The city also dealt with a number of important issues, including flood protection during the Red River flood of 1997.

Furness was on the former Fargo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and was chairman during the 1988-1989 fiscal year.

In addition, Furness was involved in the chamber's Public Affairs committee and served as an ambassador from 1999-2011.
