MOORHEAD — A Moorhead institution has closed.

Duane's House of Pizza, in business for six decades in various locations around the city, announced that it has permanently closed its shop at 2223 Highway 10 East in Moorhead.

The two Duane's locations in Fargo will remain open.

The company made the announcement with a notice on the front door and in a Monday, May 10, post on Facebook.

"To all valued customers: Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you for the last 64 years in Moorhead," the social media post said. "It is hard to say, however, that we are permanently closing our Moorhead location due to continued staffing shortages.

"We will continue to serve our customers through our two other Fargo, N.D., locations. With great appreciation, the Schultz Family," the note concluded.

The Fargo locations are at 1629 University Drive S. and 4281 45th St. S. (contained in the Southtown Pourhouse building).

The Forum left messages seeking comment from owner Steve Schultz, but did not receive a reply before deadline.

According to Duane's website , the history of the business dates to 1959 when Duane Schultz "answered an ad for manager of a new pizza restaurant opening in Moorhead ... called House of Pizza."

The website says owner John Langhousen of Hibbing, Minn., hired Schultz to be his manager of the new restaurant located at 310 Center Ave. in Moorhead. Schutlz ran the business until 1969 when he purchased the restaurant from Langhousen. Schultz changed the name to Duane's House of Pizza.

In June of 1983, Duane moved his Moorhead restaurant to 1024 Center Avenue.

Schultz opened the Fargo location on South University Drive in 1975.

Steve Schultz, Duane's son, had worked at the restaurant since 1975. He bought the business from his mother in 1999, according to Forum files.

The Highway 10 location was opened by Steve and Joanne Schultz in spring 2003 in what had been the Farm Service Center.

The Southtown Pourhouse location opened in December 2018. Schultz rents kitchen space for Duane's at Southtown, and his pizza is available to order for taphouse patrons, as well as for pickup and takeout.

The move into Pourhouse gave Duane's a location on the west side of the F-M area. (A previous location he had rented had to close after the owner lost control of the building."
