GRAND FORKS — A Grand Forks restaurant is stepping up to make sure those on the front lines of the pandemic get a good meal.

The Ground Round Grill & Bar is offering to send a meal to police officers, firefighters and hospital workers for $10 per customer who wants to send one.

The restaurant usually does this for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, but owner Matt Walkowiak said the need for sending the meals is greater this year because of COVID-19.

He said the Ground Round is grateful to help in their own way through this yearly tradition.

"Not everyone knows what to do or what you can do (to help)," Walkowiak said. "It's kind of a hidden soft spot in this time."

Walkowiak added he feels a personal connection to what front line workers are dealing with through a few of his staff members.

"I've got a couple part-time servers that also are full-time nurses, and so I've gotten some of the stories firsthand, and the stress and the anxiety is a real, real thing for them," he said.

Ground Round has taken calls for at least 65 meals so far, and they'll deliver the meals to first responders on Thanksgiving Day.
