Impact editor: It's been a wild year, but we learned a lot

We're finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel

I really don’t need to say it, but this past year was unlike any other. No person and no business was unaffected by the pandemic, and we’re only now starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel.

But we are seeing the light.

We typically publish Impact in the fall of the year, but when we started talking last summer about what we’d write in a magazine about business and industry, we didn’t know what to say. So we waited. We have a little more to say now that a full year has passed since the pandemic started, but we still don’t know exactly what the future of business and industry will look like at any level.

In this issue, we’re revisiting a few major issues of the past year like how workplaces have changed and how higher education adapted to the challenges. We also talk with community leaders who share insights about how their organizations and the business community in general has responded to the pandemic. They also share how their companies have cared for their most valuable resource: their employees.

But 2020 wasn’t all bad. Several local businesses celebrated major milestones. We talked to a few companies about how they’ve been successful for several decades and how they plan to continue that success into the future.


It’s been a wild year. One that none of us hope to see again. But we made it through, and we hope we’re a little stronger, a little more resilient and, perhaps, a little more compassionate. Thank you for reading.
