Summer may be right around the corner, but many people can't help but dive into future vacation plans a little early.

Despite Internet travel sites, many area vacationers still desire the unique vacation services provided by people like Katie Rahr.

Rahr is director of leisure sales and special event travel at Travel Leaders, a travel agency in Fargo. After 13 years of working in the travel industry, providing people with firsthand travel insight has become second nature for Rahr.

"We take trips a couple times a year and familiarize ourselves with resorts," Rahr said. "Our clients trust our opinions and experience."

Q: Do you see fewer or more people vacationing during times of flooding?

A: We have noticed that people have planned their vacations around the flood the last couple of years. However, I don't think people vacation as much when there is flooding because they want to help those threatened by the flood. They don't want to be somewhere else.

Do you think the economy has affected people's ability to take a vacation?

I think that the people who took vacations before are still taking vacations. They have maybe just adjusted their budget. Many people have decided to take shorter vacations.

What would you say has been the most popular getaway for area vacationers?

The most popular spot has always been Mexico. There has also been an increasing demand for vacations in Hawaii because of the affordable prices. Hawaii's my favorite because it's such a happy atmosphere and there is always nice weather.

Did you have your hands full during the recent college spring break?

We had quite a few people going on cruises. Everyone always says they just want to go someplace warm.

What do you like most about your job?

The best part of working with a travel agency is helping people experience great memories with their family and friends. Working with leisure travel makes me so happy. I absolutely love my job.
