FARGO - The gap left by the closing of the Gap is being filled with good times at the West Acres mall.

Current mall tenants Legacy Toys and Legacy Sweets will be combining locations and expanding into the empty Bison Court corner space later this summer, the mall’s Chief Operating Officer Alissa Adams said Monday, April 26.

The combined stores will fill out 7,748 square feet in the mall, making it the largest outlet in the Ely, Minn.-based chain, Adams said.

Legacy's COO Peter Cpin said the opportunity presented by the big mall spot was too good to pass up.

"It was a fun opportunity for sure," Cpin said Monday afternoon. "We’ve got a lot of fun things planned."

Cpin said the goal is to have store construction and build-out completed by mid- to late August.

Cpin and Adams said the store will feature an array of fun and interactive displays, including:

  • An interactive ball wall that will be more than 10 feet long and 8 feet high. "It will be the only one we have in the company," Cpin said.

  • A giant interactive Lite Brite wall, "which will be a very unique and fun experience," Cpin said.

  • A tractor display and photo spot.

  • A lifelike prehistoric “friend” will continue to be a part of the store, along with an expanded Schleice display.

  • A 10-foot-long candy cart.

  • A first-ever Legacy Littles Neighborhood featuring baby and toddler toys.

"We want to keep focusing on the experience," Cpin said. "We’ll continue to flesh out and add on to the fan favorites."
Adams promised an announcement “in the near future” about what shops will fill in the current Legacy bays in the mall.

Legacy Toys has locations in six cities in the region: Ely, Duluth, three in the Twin Cities, and the Fargo toy and sweets shops.
The company started in 2012 in Ely.

"The goal all along has to create experiences for families that pull them away from electronics and get them to pull together as a family unit," Cpin said.
