FARGO - The Macy’s store at the West Acres mall will not be on the latest list of 45 stores that the big box retailer has announced will be shuttered as part of its plans to streamline its operations by closing 125 stores by 2023.
“Macy’s at West Acres is not on the closure list,” Alissa Adams, chief operating officer of West Acres Development, said in an email Wednesday, Jan. 6.
Macy’s has already told employees at the targeted stores that those outlets would be closed by the middle of this year, CNBC reported Tuesday, Jan. 5.. Macy's has said it would release its list of store closings on Wednesday.
Macy’s closed about 30 stores in 2020. The retailer had already been shrinking for a while, thanks to the steady shift of consumers to online purchasing. Macy’s cut about 100 stores between 2015 and 2020.
Macy’s reorganization plans, first revealed in February 2020, also included cutting 2,000 corporate jobs.

The retailer has dodged bankruptcy last year. Macy’s obtained $4.5 billion in financing, the firm announced in June 2020.

Macy’s was among many retailers who had been shuttered during attempts to blunt the first wave of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Gap will be moving out of West Acres Shopping Center at the end of January, the mall announced via Facebook in early December.
The move follows the closing of Gap Kids, which shut its doors in July after 25 years of business.
Justice, a retailer that caters to the tween set, closed its store at West Acres in August. Justice also closed stores in three other North Dakota cities.
