You know what they say about something that looks too good to be true.

The adage holds up with widely circulated e-mail coupons promising a free salad at McDonald's restaurants

The giant fast food chain says it's not involved with, and won't accept coupons for the salads. The coupons are being spread online and via e-mail.

McDonald's has put a notice on its Web site that the coupon is invalid. Some of its restaurants across the country have posted signs stating the coupon won't be accepted.

Fargo-Moorhead McDonald's officials say the coupons don't seem to be causing big problems here.

"Obviously we're aware of what's happening," said Nancy Kalk, manager of the McDonald's at 220 8th St. S., Moorhead. "But we aren't experiencing much of it."

The bogus e-mail begins:

"Dear Valued Customer:

We're so excited about our new Premium Salads that we want to give all our friends a taste. We hope you'll accept the attached coupon good for a free California Cobb, Caesar or Bacon Ranch Salad."

That's followed by several paragraphs describing and praising the salads, which were introduced earlier this year.

At the bottom on the text is the line, "From your local McDonald's."

Printing the e-mail produces an official-looking coupon that supposedly can be redeemed until Sept. 1.

It's uncertain who's behind the fake coupons.
