FARGO — At age 15, Cindy John realized she could read people.
She picked up visions on their past and current situations and felt the energy surrounding them. She intuitively sensed whether they were struggling through a painful experience or facing a roadblock ahead.
It was then, John says, that she realized she had inherited the psychic abilities that ran in three generations of her family.
“I was just naturally gifted with it,” she says. “When (my grandmother) was alive, she was a guiding spirit and I gained most of my knowledge and gifts from her.”
After years of refining her skills —first with her grandmother's help, then while working as a professional psychic around her native Los Angeles — John now brings that “second sight” to Fargo.

John’s “Psychic Eye” sign on Broadway has already drummed up plenty of interest since she set up shop on the Syndicate Building’s second floor in mid-October. She offers tarot, palm and psychic energy readings for anywhere from $45 to $90 to anyone who seeks extra guidance in life.

It’s kind of unexpected for a psychic to jump from a metaphysical mecca like Los Angeles to the comparatively more conservative climate of Fargo.
But John seems up for the challenge. “This has been an area that I’ve wanted to come to for many years,” she says. “I’ve had a calling to come here. I have friends here, so that was one of the reasons, but before I visited and had seen where they lived, I was like, wow, something called me here and I just wanted to be here."
“And I really do love it here," continued John, a slightly built woman with a no-nonsense intensity. "It’s so peaceful and so quiet. It’s like you can focus.”
Show and foretell
It's a good time to hang out a shingle, as John says interest in metaphysical things seems to increase around Halloween.
She also gets busier at Christmas, when people’s stress levels spike and customers seek guidance on relationships and family. “People are stressed when they’re coming in, and some are just wanting to do it as a gift for someone,” she says.

Customers can opt for a shorter, 15-minute reading or a 40-minute “full-life reading” that draws on all of John’s services. That includes tarot card reading, a centuries-old practice of divining guidance by reading a specific layout of illustrated tarot cards, and palm-reading, in which she analyzes physical features of the palms to interpret someone’s personality characteristics and to predict future events.
Her energy readings involve assessing people’s energy levels and auras to see what issues they’re facing and how they need guidance. “It’s from the energy that I get the feeling. The feeling is what is going to give you thoughts of what’s going on around them and what’s happening in their lives,” she says.

For the most in-depth reading, John says the tarot and energy readings provide the most information. “It tells you about past, present and future and current energies and future energies and past life. The palm readings are more surface information that you would probably already generally know, things like wealth lines or fate lines.”

John will tell people about their love lives, families, financial health, jobs and homes, but she won’t give health advice or legal advice.
She also clarifies that she isn’t a medium or someone who communicates with the spirit world.
Although John guesses she’s done hundreds, maybe thousands, of in-person and online psychic readings in her lifetime, she feels fortunate that she’s never had to tell anyone they would pass soon.
However, she does sometimes have to pass along difficult news. “We don’t sugar-coat anything, so anything we do see, bad or good, you’re going to get told,” she says. “I’m entitled to say whatever I see in the reading, but the good thing is if you do see something bad, you’re able to know ahead of time, prepare yourself and try to avoid it or fix it.”
Soothsaying that soothes
John is well aware that some people believe practices like tarot or psychic reading are dangerous practices, but says her approach focuses on positive energy and helping others.

“I come across that, when people think this is a dark energy and this is something that they shouldn’t do,” says John, who is Catholic. “Everybody has a preference. It’s up to them. I don’t practice anything with witchcraft or voodoo or occult things. The work I do is very spiritual. It’s naturally gifted. It’s guiding people in the right direction.”
In the past, John’s interest in avoiding the dark side of the supernatural prompted her to refrain from working with Sacramento law enforcement who contacted her about missing people in the past. “It wasn’t something I could have tuned into honestly,” she says. “It just felt a very dark, heavy energy … even when I was just talking to them on the phone. I keep away from the dark side.”

To ensure accurate results, John asks that customers leave their skepticism at the door and don’t visit when they are under the influence. Skeptics or drunk people will not get a helpful reading.
“I prefer they come in with an open mind. When they come in with negativity … I can feel the skepticism,” she says. “If you come in feeling skeptical or negative … it just creates negative feedback for them.”

Instead, she wants her sessions to be positive, reassuring and enlightening to seekers. “I want to know they are feeling confident and like I answered their questions and that they are having a clear mind when they leave,” she says. “I want them feeling more fulfilled than when they walked in.”
