EAST GRAND FORKS — Molly Yeh announced via her Instagram page Wednesday morning she is opening Bernie’s; a restaurant in the historic Whitey’s Underground building in East Grand Forks.
“Surprise, we’re opening a restaurant!” Yeh said in a post. “Last year we took over a beautiful historic space on the banks of the Red River, where we plan to celebrate the cuisine of East Grand Forks. Midwest traditions, Scandinavian flavors, local ingredients, and REALLY GOOD BREAD will come together under one roof for a magical delicious cozy wonderland called BERNIE’S opening fall 2022.”
Sickie’s Garage Burgers & Brews occupied the space until it closed in August 2021 due to complications from the initial shutdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as issues attracting and retaining staff.
East Grand Forks Mayor Steve Gander confirmed Yeh’s arrival during April’s State of the City Address & Luncheon . After much speculation and rumors floated around online, Yeh herself has now confirmed the new business venture.
“We are so excited to welcome you in and feed you!” Yeh continued in her post. “Follow @berniesegf for updates as we develop the menu, hire staff, honor the ghosts of this historic space and create new stories of our own.”

Yeh recently received an honorary degree from UND at the May commencement ceremony.
