BISMARCK — An estimated 33,600 gallons of produced water spilled Sunday, June 14, at a saltwater disposal well in Mountrail County, N.D., according to a news release from the state Department of Environmental Quality.
Produced water, or brine, is a mixture of saltwater, oil and sometimes drilling fluids that is created during oil and gas production.
BNN North Dakota reported the spill about 13 miles north of New Town occurred due to a pipeline leak. By the time the spill was reported, about half of the brine had been recovered.
Department officials will continue inspecting the site and monitoring remediation efforts, according to the release.
