MOORHEAD - Nature of the North, a business devoted to rock climbing and the outdoors, is opening Monday, June 22, in the Wright Building at 814 Center Ave.
In a Facebook post, the firm said it will be open to members only with limited hours, and increase hours as allowed through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our company has been hosting workshops and events to get people outside and grow our outdoor community for the past four years but now finally has a brick and mortar location in Moorhead,” the Facebook post said. “This space will also aim to be a place to rent gear and a community space for people to play games, watch climbers, plan trips, talk about past and upcoming adventures, find resources, or just hang out and meet new people.”
In January, founder Jon Walters told The Forum that the goal is to keep people active during the cold winter months.
“Nature of the North’s goal is to get people outside,” Walters said. “In this area we all know the winter months can take up half of a year and, we realized, in order to get people outside, we should consider bringing the outside, in.”

A typical membership is $50 a month, though a one-month membership is $60, the company’s web site says.
Youth under age 18, college students, senior citizens and active duty military members or veterans are $40 a month. There are also day rates and punch pass rates.

The facility is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Members can do bouldering, a form of rock climbing performed on small rock formations or artificial rock walls without the use of ropes or harnesses. The facility also offers a Kilter Board climbing training wall.
Classes, one-on-one sessions and private group sessions are available.
The downtown shop also offers other events, including group bike rides and nature outings.
