Passengers will soon track their bus using ‘CAT Prowler’ app

GRAND FORKS — Cities Area Transit will soon unveil CAT Prowler, a new app that allows the public to track the locations of buses.

“They can track the buses and not have to wait outside in the cold if they don't want to," said Dale Bergman, Cities Area Transportation director.

But that's not the only feature it has.

"We can send out a notification to all the customers on that particular route that there's a bus that's running late because of an accident or running late because of weather," Bergman said.

WDAY News has learned the app and hardware cost about $147,000. But it's not fully operational yet on all of the buses.

"It didn't work right away so the company's coming back after the holidays to finish that up. We hope to have it to the public sometime mid-January," Bergman said.

This is one of several changes just around the corner at Cities Area Transit.

Crews could soon break ground on a nearly $5 million bus garage renovation and expansion.

"The project will get bid out in January and be released so that it can get started by April 1. And then have it completed by January of 2020," Bergman said.

The new bus garage will double the space available to house larger buses room for more than a dozen of them.

CAT could soon launch technology allowing customers to pay for tickets through their phones, b ut that's still an idea that hasn't been decided.
