FARGO - A rundown old horse stable is almost ready to reopen as Fargo's first cidery, adding another taproom to a bustling downtown.
Members of Fargo's Renaissance Zone Authority got a sneak peek of Wild Terra Cider and Brewing earlier this week, walking through the so-called Stable Building, 6 12th St. N., which has come a long ways since its neglected condition a year ago.
Fargo couple Breezee and Ethan Hennings have worked for months to rehab the structure that's stood there since about 1905 and was originally used as a stable for horses that hauled construction materials around downtown.
During a Wednesday, Nov. 15, tour, Kilbourne Group Project Manager Mike Zimney said the building, assessed at $60,000 before construction started, would've been easier to tear down than fix. Still, he said the stable has "so much character," and that's why the Hennings wanted to save it.
There's also some historical precedence for putting a cidery in a building like this -- Zimney said cider tasting rooms were commonly found in stables in England.
"This is going to be another cool note to downtown," he said.
The Hennings told The Forum earlier this year that they decided to get into the hard apple cider business after brewing beer and cider at home and seeing the potential at cideries in the Pacific Northwest.
Even with months of hard work ahead of them, including the need to add windows, install a new roof, insulation and siding over the entire exterior and modernize the building's mechanical and electrical systems, Ethan Hennings said in May that it was love at first walkthrough when he toured the stable.
"We saw the vision right away," he said.
An exact opening date remains to be seen, though Wild Terra looked to have completed much of the work by Wednesday. The cidery has scheduled a "Hope We Are Done Party" for Dec. 2, so the wait might almost be over.
