FARGO - Slim Chickens is coming to Fargo and will be looking for your buck, buck, bucks!

The new restaurant is planned for 4477 30th Ave. S., according to city permitting records.

Project costs for the 3,430 square foot eatery are estimated at $1,451,800.

The Slim Chickens is a franchise restaurant and will be owned and operated by Preferred Restaurant Group, based in Minot, N.D.

Preferred Restaurant Group currently operates 14 Taco John’s and two Slim Chickens (one each in Minot, N.D. and Helena, Mont.).

Wendy Howe, director of marketing and public relations, said Slim Chickens fit well with Preferred Restaurant Group's growth strategy.

"Slim Chickens was (the franchise opportunity) that we really fell in love with. ... They are a smaller, younger franchise, but they're growing rapidly, And we really love the food," Howe said Monday, June 28. "It was love at first bite and we knew it was the right thing and we knew it would do well in the Midwest."

Land for the eatery has been purchased and the goal is to open the Fargo restaurant by late fall.

Howe said the restaurant group purchased the rights to open six Slim Chickens in North Dakota and six in Montana. She said other possible locations for restaurants in North Dakota include Bismarck, Grand Forks and Williston. She said another city could get a Slim Chickens, but Fargo could well end up with two outlets.

"We think everyone is going to love it as much as we do," Howe said of Slim Chickens. "They're doing a lot of fun, cool things."


Slim Chickens is a fast-casual restaurant chain which specializes in chicken tenders, wings, sandwiches, salads, wraps, chicken and waffles, and house-made dipping sauces.

Fargo-Moorhead area competition includes Chick-fil-A and Brew Bird, Buffalo Wild Wings, Buffalo Wings and Rings, and a number of other fast food and casual restaurants that have made it a point to have chicken sandwiches, tenders or wings on their menus.

Founders Greg Smart and Tom Gorden opened the first Slim Chickens in 2003 in Fayetteville, Ark.

The corporation has great eggspectations to move up in the pecking order for sales in the "better chicken" segment of the fast-casual restaurant market.

Slim Chickens has more than 120 locations in 19 U.S. states, Kuwait and London. The company intends to grow toward a national footprint of 600 restaurants over the next decade.
