FARGO - The South University Drive area once again has a neighborhood hardware hangout.

Burggraf’s Ace Hardware recently opened in the former Zimmerman’s Furniture building at 2810 S. University Drive.

Store Manager David Gregor says the many thousands of items on the 11,000-square-foot retail floor should meet the needs of the area’s handymen and women.

“We’re after the weekend warriors, the home heroes,” Gregor said Tuesday, March 5.

Many of the homes within a couple miles were built in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, Gregor said.

When Scheels moved its hardware store in 2006 from its former South University Drive location, it left a void for the area’s fixer-uppers who preferred a fast-stop, rather than hour-long jaunts to big box stores, Gregor said.

“It’s an established neighborhood and that bodes well for hardware stores,” Gregor said.

The store is the eighth in a family-owned chain of hardware stores.

In 2016, Steven Burggraf opened Burggraf’s Ace Hardware in the Northport Shopping Center in Fargo. Burggraf also owns stores in Grand Forks and Fosston, Grand Rapids, Winona, Duluth and Cottage Grove, Minn.

The South University store is about 95 percent set up with a mix of hardware, plumbing and electrical supplies, Gregor said. A glass and screen replacement area is also being set up, he said.

The store offers a wide selection of name-brand power and hand tools, including DeWalt, Milwaukee, Stihl, Makita, Irwin, Ace, Craftsman and Stanley.

Grill enthusiasts should also like the selection of Big Green Egg and Traeger grills and smokers, along with the range of accessories, sauces and rubs on hand, Gregor said.

The store can also set up replacement electronic vehicle key fobs and remote starters, he said.

“Ninety percent of the stuff in here takes care of the 90 percent of the homes,” Gregor said.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Other local Ace Hardware locations in the area include Scheels Home and Hardware at 3202 13th Ave. S., Fargo, Moorhead Ace Hardware at 20 6th St. S., and Ostrom’s Ace Hardware at 1100 13th Ave. E., No. 2, West Fargo.
