In North Dakota and South Dakota a gridded rainfall index is used as a proxy for rangeland and forage production, and is intended to reflect how much precipitation is received relative to the long term average for a specified area and timeframe. It is critical for producers to review the historic data for their grid. Producers can review historical grid data on the RMA web site at www.rma.usda.gov .

Another insurance program available to producers in North Dakota and South Dakota is the Annual Forage program. Annual Forage uses the Rainfall Index as a proxy to insure annually planted crops to be used for haying or grazing. The sales closing date for spring planted annual forage crops is December 15.

Doug Hagel, Billings Regional Office director, reminds producers to contact their crop insurance agent for more information on the new rules. For more information on how to find a crop insurance agent, go to www.rma.usda.gov/tools/agent.html .
