MOORHEAD — Hotdog! Pet Salon is one of the first businesses to open in a new mixed-use development at 814 Center Avenue in downtown Moorhead.
Hotdog! Pet Salon, a full-service groomer that offers standard breed cuts and creative styling for dogs and cats, opened Sept. 30 and held its grand opening "paw-ty" earlier this month.
Owner Cristen Voeltz told The Forum this spring the main reason for the move was a lack of parking near its location on First Avenue North in downtown Fargo.
"Downtown has changed a lot since we started down here. It's great for restaurants and shops and stuff, but it's gotten pretty difficult for people trying to get their dogs in and out," Voeltz said.
In addition to better parking, the new location also nearly doubles the salon's square footage inside. The additional space made it possible to add three self-serve grooming stations, Voeltz said.
Hotdog! Pet Salon will provide pet-owners with shampoo, conditioner, towels and other supplies.
"They can use it all. Leave the mess, and we'll clean everything up when they're done," she said.
Voeltz said the self-serve stations are meant to attract new customers.
"A lot of clients we have (now) are like, 'We want you to do it,' but I feel like it might open up opportunities for people who don't want to make an appointment," she said.

The self-serve stations will be available for use starting Friday, Oct. 18. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The last clients will be accepted one hour prior to close.
Voeltz said the self-serve stations are one way for her to grow the business. Until she can hire another groomer, Hotdog! Pet Salon is unable to accept new grooming clients.
Voeltz admits she's "really picky" when it comes to hiring employees.
"We're really looking for that right person who really takes pride in their work," she said.
A great staff has helped Voeltz grow Hotdog! Pet Salon into what it is today.
"They're all lovely people who are great with animals. I can trust them completely," she said.
