WEST FARGO — Enter Sit Stay Spa and be prepared for a one-two punch of pooch personality.

You might be greeted by Sadie, a lively golden retriever with energy to spare, or Penelope, a sweet senior mixed-breed who’ll amble over and settle with a contented groan by your side if you pause to give her a back rub.

After the official greeters give their paws up, owner Jenna Jackson and her staff will take their turn making your hound happy and handsome.

Sit Stay Spa opened May 4 at 415 32nd Ave. E.

Jackson worked at Moorhead’s Mutt Hutt for 15 years before it closed. She started Sit Stay Spa in that Moorhead location, then announced on Facebook in December her plans to move to the south side of West Fargo, near its border with Fargo.

“I didn’t want to work for anyone else,” Jackson said. She promises that all the puppers, doggos - and a few cats - will get "a more upscale experience."

Jackson has another six people on staff, among them several who followed her from the Mutt Hutt.

Jackson is the chief groomer and she’s training two others as groomers. Four people give dogs baths.

They groom dogs of all types, and specialize in handling older canines, Manager Jodie Voit said.

Voit calls Jackson “the dog whisperer" for her ability to work with older dogs.

Jackson, who has worked with local dog rescue groups for the last seven years, has made it a point to take in older dogs, particularly those nearing the end of their days.

That’s what brought Penelope into Jackson’s life. But rather than falter, the 15-year-old rescue with the pink nail polish on her claws has rebounded. She also keeps a 17-year-old Pomeranian.

Jackson says she retained many of her clients from her Mutt Hutt days and has attracted many people from the neighborhood.

“We’re busy,” she said.

While the spa takes walk-ins, more involved Spaniel spiffing and Pom primping - such as a bath and full haircut - requires an appointment.

The shop also does nail trims, deshedding, and medicated baths for skin issues.

The shop has a Facebook page and can be reached at (701) 809-3580 or by email at grooming@sitstayspafargo.com.

Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
