GRAND FORKS -- A drone at King's Walk Golf Course in Grand Forks dropped off its first commercial deliveries Saturday, Sept. 15.

Earlier this month, drone company Flytrex, drone service EASE Drones and the golf course announced they had launched the drone’s first pilot flight, making Kings Walk the first U.S. golf course to offer drone deliveries.

Wes Shover, head of Flytrex U.S. operations, said Saturday afternoon the drone had delivered six orders. He added he hopes to deliver 10 total by the end of the day. The drone dropped off all of its orders at a single drop-off site.

“The long-term goal is for the customers to choose their own location,” Shover said, for which the golf course still needs approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. FAA officials were at the golf course Saturday, and Shover said he hoped by the end of the day the administration would be impressed.

Golfers can order food from the golf course’s Eagles Crest Grill using the “Flytrex Eat” phone application. The drone service was offering five different items: ham sandwiches, burgers, cheeseburgers, brats and hotdogs, along with chips, drinks and other small sides.

The drone carries up to 6 pounds, Shover said. The golf course has two: one that flies, and one for backup.

Customers said they were pleased with their orders, including golfer Brad Lucke.

“Obviously with everything going on at UND,” Lucke said, “and the park by the Air Force, it’s pretty neat.”

Shover said the King's Walk golf course drone will be back at it Sunday, as long as the weather’s nice. “We actually scheduled this for the whole week,” he added, saying, some days the drone will be available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and other days from noon to 8 p.m.

“The biggest thing is making sure the customer is happy,” Shover said.
