FARGO-Fargo has the nation's best job market for 2018, according to a new report.
Job search website ZipRecruiter came up with its new rankings, which were released Thursday, Jan. 4, by using a "best job market index" that analyzed 10 factors, including a city's labor market opportunity, retail resilience, unemployment rate, median earnings and cost of housing.
Fargo topped the 2018 list, earning an overall score of 80.1 in the index. That's well above the 78.6 recorded by second-place city Columbia, Mo.
A short description of the top 10 cities said Fargo stood out primarily because of its low unemployment rate of 1.6 percent. The city also had high marks for its opportunity index, diverse range of industries and short commutes.
The city's top five industries based on the job seeker ratio are physical therapy, construction, human resources, finance and insurance and health care, respectively.
While Fargo's low unemployment rate has drawn attention in recent years, the city has also grappled with a workforce shortage that has made it hard for some companies to hire full staffs or grow their businesses. Local officials have previously said Fargo-Moorhead will need to fill 30,000 more jobs in the next five years to keep up with the issue.
Two cities in Wisconsin, Oshkosh and Wausau, made ZipRecruiter's top 10 list. Minneapolis was ranked No. 10 in 2018 and had the highest score in the country for a large job market.
