The end of summer can seem sad, but a number of fun events planned this weekend to have one last splash in the sun helps ease the pain.

Jenny Field

Thursday, Aug. 30

Free your mind and your art will follow. That's how Jenny Field approached her new show, "Possibilities of Vivid," at the Spirit Room, 111 Broadway N. The artist didn't plan or sketch, just set down to work spontaneously. The result is a colorful exploration of texture and form. She will talk about the experience at 5:30 p.m. Thursday during an opening reception that starts at 5 p.m.; www.spiritroom.net or 701-237-0230.

Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion

Friday, Aug. 31, through Monday, Sept. 3

Fire up! Get steamed! Those aren't rallying cries for high school football games, but they just might work for the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion. The annual four-day celebration of steam-powered engines used in farming, logging, transportation and different aspects of life chugs along this weekend in Rollag, Minn. Gates open daily at 6 a.m. and close after the sun sets Friday through Monday, with parades, demonstrations, spark shows and more in between. Admission is $12 a day, free for children 14 and younger; https://rollag.com.

Hairball

Friday

Say goodbye to summer, but shout it loud Friday night when Hairball tears it up at the Knickerbocker Liquor Locker in Hickson, N.D. The band will bring its arena rock show - including video monitors and fireworks - to this outdoor jam, but the real draw is a mix of classic rock and 1980s-era heavy metal that will have your hands in the air. Double Forte kicks things off at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 the day of the ID-only show; 701-588-4282.

O.A.R.

Saturday, Sept. 1

Keep your final weekend of summer light and upbeat with the feel-good vibes of O.A.R. The poppy jam rock band returns to the Bluestem Amphitheater, 801 50th Ave. S., Moorhead, on Saturday and will bring the party and tunes, like "Hey Girl," "Peace," "Shattered (Turn the Car Around)" and, of course, the epic "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker." Matt Nathanson opens the show at 6 p.m. Tickets range from $33 to $65.50; https://jadepresents.com or 866-300-8300.

Trevor Hall

Sunday, Sept. 2

Keep the good vibes rolling along Sunday when Trevor Hall plays Fargo Brewing Co., 610 N. University Drive, Fargo. Hall combines acoustic folk with world music and island influences. No matter where he's pulling from musically, his songs reflect a strong sense of spirituality. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 the day of this ID-only show; https://jadepresents.com or 866-300-8300.
