MOORHEAD — The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County will be holding a "Slaveholders and the North Star State" event from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Hjemkomst Center, 202 First Ave. N.

Dr. Christopher Lehman, chair and professor of ethnic studies at St. Cloud State University and author of "Slavery's Reach: Southern Slaveholders and the North Star State," will lead an insightful dive into slavery in Minnesota.

Through research in records, censuses, newspapers and archival collections, Lehman has brought to light northern complicity in American slavery.

From the 1840s to the end of the Civil War, leading Minnesotans invited slaveholders and their wealth into the free state of Minnesota, enriching its communities and residents. Slaveholder wealth was invested in some of the state's major institutions and provided a financial foundation for multiple towns and counties.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public.
