FARGO — Sanford Health is honoring those who've helped save lives through organ donation.
April is National Donate Life Month. It helps raise awareness about the importance of registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor.
According to Donate Life, more than 100,000 men, woman and children are on the transplant list. By registering to be an organ donor, one person could help save up to eight lives.
Sanford's Spiritual Care team raised a flag Friday, April 16, to honor past donors, and help raise awareness to the importance of donating.
"When anybody passes away it's such a tragedy, but through that tragedy we find that many lives can be saved," says Melissa Erickson, Sanford Health's director of transplants.
185 people were organ donors last year through Life Source, an organ procurement network that covers Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. 603 organs were transplanted.
